Ferrous and Non-ferrous Metals

premier • Mar 29, 2022

Metal recycling  has become increasingly popular as our world becomes more advanced. Most metals can be recycled, and the two main categories are ferrous and non-ferrous.

Ferrous Metals

Ferrous metals refer to metals that contain iron. These metals are known for their durability and strength. They are also magnetic and more vulnerable to rusting due to their high carbon content, except for stainless steel and wrought iron.

Examples of ferrous metals include:

  • Steel: Steel is strong and durable, making it perfect for various applications in manufacturing and construction.
  • Stainless steel: Stainless steel is made of steel alloyed with chromium and nickel. It is incredibly resistant to corrosion, making it a great choice for applications where durability is key.
  • Carbon steel: It is a type of steel that contains a high amount of carbon. This makes it harder and more brittle than other types of steel. It is often used in manufacturing because of its strength and resistance to wear and tear.
  • Cast iron: It is a brittle metal composed of iron, carbon, and silicon. It has a high melting point and can withstand high temperatures.
  • Wrought iron: Similar to steel but is made with lower carbon content. This makes it less durable but more malleable.

Non-ferrous Metals

Non-ferrous metals do not contain iron, which means that they are more resistant to rust and corrosion. They are often used in manufacturing because they are lighter and more malleable than ferrous metals. Additionally, they are not magnetic.

Examples of non-ferrous metals include:

  • Aluminum: Due to its lightweight nature,  aluminum  is used to manufacture a variety of products, from cans to airplanes.
  • Copper: Copper is a soft metal mostly used in electrical applications because of its high conductivity.
  • Lead: Lead has a low melting point and is often used in batteries and weights.
  • Zinc: Zinc is a brittle metal mainly used in galvanizing steel to prevent corrosion.

Anyone who spends any amount of time shooting rifles or handguns generates a lot of empty brass. For the occasional shooter it is tempting to throw it out. The high-volume shooter probably reloads their own ammo or knows someone who does, thereby reusing those fired cases. Either way, when you’re through with empty brass, don’t […] The post Why Empty Rifle & Handgun Brass Recycling Is Important appeared first on Scrap Mart Metals.
