Why Stainless Steel Recycling Is Valuable

premier • Sep 08, 2022

These days, in recycling, scrap metal is in high demand. It makes it a profitable side business for most people. All you need is to gather any metals in the corner of your home and sell them to a scrapyard. One metal that has provided revenue for scrappers and buyers is stainless steel recycling.

Stainless steel was first introduced in the early 1900s and has since become a valuable metal. This metal is readily available and recyclable. Here are some of the reasons stainless steel is so valuable.

1.     Stainless Steel is More Durable

Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant. It has a long lifespan compared to other metals as it does not rust, thus it costs more.  Stainless steel is an alloy with  10.5% of the chemical chromium , which makes it anti-corrosive.

Stainless steel is non-porous, although it is destructible if exposed to excess moisture, acids, or salt. It can also stain, and if the top layer is scratched and the layers underneath exposed, it can corrode.

2.   It is Easily Attainable

Stainless steel is found everywhere, from your kitchen to cutlery, pots, pans, refrigerator, etc.  Stainless steel recycling becomes more accessible as the metal is in full. The availability of stainless steel makes it easy to collect and sell to scrap metal yards for extra coins you’d otherwise lose in waste.

3.     Stainless Steel Prices are Decent

Stainless steel varies for different reasons. The economy’s strength,  International factors  such as natural disasters, trade tariffs, etc., all influence stainless steel prices. However, the cost of stainless steel remains decent, and you can make good money if you give yours up for sale when the prices have gone up.

4.     Stainless Steel Grades

Stainless steel is widely available and comes in different forms. It has a series of grades that differentiates various steel types with many classifications between 200-600.  Each category has unique properties, such as ferritic(magnetic), austenitic(non-magnetic), duplex, etc.

Type 304 is non-magnetic and is common in fridges, storage tanks, etc. It’s the most prevalent and withstands corrosion from food process chemicals such as winemaking or milk processing.
